Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba hold the key to Manchester United usurping Liverpool once again in years to come, according to their former team-mate Ander Herrera.

The Spanish midfielder, who left Old Trafford on a free transfer last summer to join PSG, still follows his old club closely.

Rashford even encouraged 30-year-old Herrera to move back to Manchester last week on Instagram amid the coronavirus crisis.

The Red Devils are currently working on regaining their match fitness and sharpness ahead of the Premier League ’s return on Wednesday, June 17.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s fifth-placed United are focused on qualifying for the Champions League this season, while an FA Cup quarter-final and Europa League football still awaits them too.

United are building around a strong foundation which includes goalkeeper David de Gea, captain Harry Maguire, World Cup winner Pogba, January signing Bruno Fernandes and striker Rashford.

Herrera played alongside the bulk of United’s current squad at Old Trafford and sees real ability in a handful of Solskjaer’s star men.

Outlining Rashford and Martial’s potential, Herrera told The Athletic: “They have the quality to be among the top 10 in the world.

“Why do we admire Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, or Hazard, who I also think is one of the best in the world? We admire them because they keep that form for a long time.

“If they do it, they will become… maybe not Messi or Cristiano, because they are unique in the history of football… but they can be top five or top 10.

“But they have to do it for a long time and keep it up.

On Pogba, Herrera added: “It is the same for Paul. Rashford is on his way to doing it. And Paul can be the best midfielder in the world if he keeps playing those games where we are all amazed by him.

“But to keep it at that level is the most difficult thing in football. To keep at it it Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday, every time.

“If those three can do that, Manchester United will win the Premier League soon, for sure.”

United’s first game back in England’s top flight next week is away to Tottenham, where they will come up against former manager Jose Mourinho.

PICTURES: Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell join Chelsea training

Published

Chelsea returned to training today (Wednesday) at Cobham, and there were two new faces joining the rest of the squad, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell. The two summer arrivals had yet to train with the squad since signing, dealing with quarantine (presumably) and heel injury issues, respectively.

It’s unclear if either will be fit and ready for this weekend’s match against Liverpool, but it’s still nice to see them in training with the rest of the group! (Those who played on Monday apparently had a lighter session, but were all out there nonetheless.)

There’s no word on how close Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic may be. Ziyech is probably still a couple weeks out with his knee problem, at least, but Pulisic was supposed to be close before suffering a potential setback with his hamstring late last week. Neither were pictured in training, and one would assume their presence would get emphasized had they been there.
