KATE, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William said they were “thinking of those” affected by the fatal floods to have hit parts of Europe in recent days in a heartfelt statement.
Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, 39, and Prince William, 39, spoke out on Friday in reaction to the devastating floods to have hit parts of Europe in recent days.
The royal couple shared the moving statement on Twitter and said they were thinking of all those affected.
Kensington Palace tweeted: “The damage and loss caused by the flooding disaster in Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands is devastating.
“We are thinking of all those affected by these floods.”
After days of heavy rain, 103 people have died in Germany alone, the largest number killed in a natural disaster in the country in almost 60 years.
They included 12 residents of a home for disabled people surprised by the floods during the night.
Belgium has also been badly affected by flooding and has declared a day of mourning on Tuesday
Officials said there were at least 20 dead and another 20 missing.
The state premier of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet said the flooding was a “catastrophe of historic dimensions,”
Meteorologists have attributed the devastation of the floods to climate change.
According to scientists a shift in the jet stream has brought water that once stayed at sea inland.
Kate and William were widely praised on Twitter for speaking out about the tragedy.
One Twitter user wrote: “Thank you for your compassion, Your Royal Highnesses.
“In Germany over 60 people lost their lives, over a thousand are missing. Entire villages have been completely destroyed. It’s heartbreaking.”
Another put: “Thank you Prince William and Catherine.”
And a third wrote: “Thank you Duke and Duchess.”
