Manchester United: Fans slam Angel Gomes after Solskjaer gives update amid interest from Chelsea

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted he has no idea if Angel Gomes will sign a new deal at Old Trafford.

Gomes, who has been linked with Chelsea in recent months, is out of contract next week.

The Red Devils have been unable to reach an agreement with his representatives so far, as they were ‘underwhelmed‘ by the new offer on the table.

Despite insisting a deal is “not too far away” last week, Solskjaer told a press conference “I can’t update on that” ahead of the Premier League clash with Sheffield United.

Last month, the Premier League announced clubs will be allowed to offer extensions to players with contracts expiring in June.

However Man United are only interested in tying him down to a long-term deal, and the transfer saga has rumbled on for a number of months, amid interest from Barcelona.

Even though Barca were genuinely keen to sign Gomes, they had no intentions of offering him first team football, which disappointed the teenager.

The 19-year-old, who turns 20 in August, has only made six appearances for Solskjaer so far, and he will become a free agent when his contract runs out at the end of the month. His current market value is estimated at £3m via Transfermarkt.

Whether or not he stays or goes probably won’t bother the Norwegian too much, as he has so many attacking options to choose from, including Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Odion Ighalo.

Indeed, Gomes has even failed to supplant Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira, and his lack of game time makes it hard for him to hold any leverage.

Given his young age, he is still largely unproven, and Ed Woodward should not give in to his demands, although the Red Devils might regret sanctioning a move in the future, as ended up happening with Gerard Pique.

Naturally, many United fans slammed Gomes’ “ridiculous” transfer update, with one fan urging the board to “let him go,” and another branding him “clueless.”

PICTURES: Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell join Chelsea training

Chelsea returned to training today (Wednesday) at Cobham, and there were two new faces joining the rest of the squad, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell. The two summer arrivals had yet to train with the squad since signing, dealing with quarantine (presumably) and heel injury issues, respectively.

It’s unclear if either will be fit and ready for this weekend’s match against Liverpool, but it’s still nice to see them in training with the rest of the group! (Those who played on Monday apparently had a lighter session, but were all out there nonetheless.)

There’s no word on how close Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic may be. Ziyech is probably still a couple weeks out with his knee problem, at least, but Pulisic was supposed to be close before suffering a potential setback with his hamstring late last week. Neither were pictured in training, and one would assume their presence would get emphasized had they been there.
