Their brand has been described as “toxic” and they have been dogged by claims their marriage is on the rocks.

But Prince Harry and Meghan have looked as devoted to each other as ever here at the Invictus Games this week. And the couple have also been bombarded with love from fans, as well as the inspirational event’s competitors and their families, at every turn.

Harry, in particular, has appeared to be a man transformed as I’ve watched him in his element. Clearly energised by the positivity of the event, and those around him, he has looked in his element while supporting, and often bantering with, his fellow military men.

He has also constantly made time for competitors’ families, especially their children. And he has even been seen enjoying a beer. One Games volunteer I spoke to summed up the mood here on Friday night, saying: “It’s like the old Harry is back, but now even better. He’s grown-up now, but he’s still letting himself have fun.”

In short, the Duke has once again allowed the public to see the Harry they’ve always known and loved, but seen less of in recent times. Meghan, too, has been a revelation since her arrival in Dusseldorf on Tuesday. It has been a joy to see her at Harry’s side, often walking perfectly in step while holding his hand.

She has bought star-power and glamour, as well as genuine warmth, to the event. Without her the event would have not have been able to maintain its place at the top of the news agenda. And it would not have garnered the international attention – and column inches – it needs to keep its sponsors happy in order to exist going forward.
