Report: Arsenal want to beat Bayern Munich to signing of excellent young defender

Nico-Elvedi

According to Le10Sport, Arsenal and Bayern Munich are ready to battle for the signature of Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi. The 23-year-old is one of the best young defenders in Europe and so with just one year remaining on his contract, it is no surprise that Arsenal (and Bayern!) would be amongst the clubs alerted.

The report states that he could be valued at just £25million, a modest price considering his age and ability.

Nico is well known for his on the ball ability, with 91.3% passing accuracy in the Bundesliga so far this season. He averages 53.2 passes and 2.3 interceptions, 1.6 tackles and 3.5 clearances. Elvedi’s ability to play all across the defence, previously covering at both left and right back, will also make him an even more attractive signing.

But whilst Arsenal certainly need reinforcements at the back and Elvedi would probably improve them, the club will need to shift some defenders if they can make room for the Swiss international.

Currently, the club are set to welcome William Saliba and Mavropanos back from loan, he will join Mustafi, Luiz, Holding, Chambers and Sokratis at the club, whilst it remains to be seen whether or not the Gunners will make the loan deal for Pablo Mari permanent, but he appears to fit in well, especially being left-footed.

Considering the situation, Arsenal are only likely to bid seriously for Elvedi, or any other defender this summer, if they can sell at least two of their current crop.

Who would you like to see leave and join? Personally, if the asking price if too much for Upamecano then Elvedi and Mari in would be my preference, with Mustafi and Sokratis making way, and Holding and Mavropanos going out on loan.
