Arsenal have activated the option in David Luiz’s contract to keep the defender at the club for another season.
The Brazilian centre-back was free to leave the Emirates, with his deal expiring at the end of June.
But according to The Athletic, Arsenal have moved to offer the defender another year in north London.
Luiz arrived from Chelsea last summer in an £8 million deal, with the 33-year-old considered as a direct replacement for Laurent Koscielny, who left for Bordeaux.
it was widely reported at the time that Luiz penned a two-year deal when he joined Arsenal, but football.london understands the centre-back actually signed a 12-month deal with an option for a further season.
And that option has finally been activated, handing Mikel Arteta with one less player to replace in the summer transfer window.
However, the news has not gone down well with all Arsenal supporters, with many feeling that the defender did not deserve another one-year deal
The Gunners’ 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last week was notable for Luiz’s disastrous contribution from the bench.
Having been brought on for the injured Pablo Mari, Luiz was at fault for City’s opening goal before half time, before conceding a penalty and getting sent off in the second period.
One fan wrote: ‘Committing to until a month before his 33rd birthday is ridiculous. Paying for David Luiz’s year 33 season is ridiculous.
‘The Mari thing is fine at best and it being fine is predicated on him being like our 4th CB which doesn’t look likely.’
Another posted: ‘Please no. I can only handle so much of David Luiz. I was hoping after the City game he wouldn’t wear the shirt again. This is ridiculous.’
