Leipzig chief pours cold water over Timo Werner Chelsea transfer

Red Bull Leipzig chief Oliver Mintzlaff has denied a deal has been struck over Timo Werner’s transfer to Chelsea.

Reports have claimed Werner’s £53m release clause had been triggered by Frank Lampard’s side and he was on his way to Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool had been the favourites to land him, with Manchester United also in the hunt for his signature, but Chelsea are thought to be in pole position.

However, Leipzig insist there is no ‘formal agreement’ that will see him move to Chelsea.

‘We haven’t had an exchange yet,’ managing director Mintzlaff told Sky Sports Deutschland .

‘Accordingly, we have nothing to report. Timo Werner is a player for RB Leipzig. He signalled a few weeks ago that he was busy with a transfer. Until now nothing is done.

‘We are concentrating on the final sprint in the league. We want to qualify for the Champions League. That is the only thing we are currently discussing with Timo.

‘It was important for us that we extend the contract with him. We did that last summer because of course it is important for our young club that no player moves on a free transfer.

‘Of course, there was this exit clause that we put in the contract to give him the opportunity to take the next step. ‘Now Timo is sitting in the driver’s seat, not us anymore. So far, he has not drawn upon the clause, nor has any club sent us a transfer contract.’

PICTURES: Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell join Chelsea training

Published

on

Chelsea returned to training today (Wednesday) at Cobham, and there were two new faces joining the rest of the squad, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell. The two summer arrivals had yet to train with the squad since signing, dealing with quarantine (presumably) and heel injury issues, respectively.

It’s unclear if either will be fit and ready for this weekend’s match against Liverpool, but it’s still nice to see them in training with the rest of the group! (Those who played on Monday apparently had a lighter session, but were all out there nonetheless.)

There’s no word on how close Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic may be. Ziyech is probably still a couple weeks out with his knee problem, at least, but Pulisic was supposed to be close before suffering a potential setback with his hamstring late last week. Neither were pictured in training, and one would assume their presence would get emphasized had they been there.
